What do zombies have to do with Planet Earth? Everything! – according to game developers for The Last of Us. A segment of Planet Earth featured a parasitic fungus that takes over the brains of ants, protruding grotesquely from their heads. Sounds plenty sci-fi to me! Apparently there are thousands of these kinds of fungi, each of which can take over the brains of different species. And thus, The Last of Us was born.
Humans are infected by this fungus becoming zombie-like creatures, leaving the rest of the population with a struggle for survival in a crumbling world. The Last of Us focuses on two of these survivors – a 14 year old girl, Ellie and a father figure, Joel. This article highlights the premiere trailer for The Last of Us from the Video Game Awards, where the girl narrates, “Day and night, all we do is survive. It never looks up. He tells me how these streets were crowded with people just going about their lives. (chuckles) Must have been nice.” The short preview is reminiscent of The Book of Eli, when Eli tells his companion that in the world before, people had more than they needed or could ever really want, “We had no idea what was precious and what wasn’t. We threw away things people kill each other for now.”
Video game reviewers are already reeling from excitement that this game will not be just another zombie game but will really focus on story, like Naughty Dog’s Unchartered series. In fact, The Last of Us is based not only on the comic book The Walking Dead but also on a book by a classic American novelist – Cormac McCarthy. McCarthy’s masterpiece The Road portrays the struggles of a father and son as they venture through a post-apocalyptic world. (As a video game enthusiast and former literature major, that’s a book I’ll soon hunt down!)
The Last of Us has already been in development for the last two years and will be released sometime late 2012, early 2013. Many developers from Unchartered 2 were moved to The Last of Us after Unchartered 2 shipped. The game is classified as a third-person survival, horror-action-adventure and will only be available for the PS3. Be sure to check out the incredible trailer that debuted at the Video Game Awards this month.
KitGuru says: You can be sure this game will be action-packed and filled with captivating story. Since Naughty Dog Unchartered developers are hard at work on The Last of Us, this is a game you won’t want to miss. Intense zombie attacks and struggle for survival will make waves among gamers when The Last of Us is released in the coming year or so.
