Earlier this year, KitGuru brought you news of the upcoming Star Trek game, set for release in 2013, sometime before Star Trek 2 enters theatres. Unlike other games based off movies, this is one gamers have high hopes for…with some even predicting its place beside Mass Effect as an epic sci-fi masterpiece.
This past week produced new sneak peeks at this highly anticipated game during the Global Gamers Day event in Las Vegas. Two hundred people were privy to the demo, watching it in true nerdy style with 3D glasses. The demo was met with positive response and was described as having a “cinematic feel, awesome combat, and reliant co-op gameplay [plus] lots of explosions.” The game looks promising. Forbes even believes the game could achieve what the newer movies have done, “Make Gene Roddenberry’s creation cool and relevant again for a wide audience.”
There are still few concrete details about the game. It is being written by Marianna Krawczky (God of War writer) and Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman (writers/producers for Star Trek 2). Tricorders will play an essential role in gameplay, and combat and skills will vary greatly between Spock and Kirk, allowing for satisfying replay value. Although Kirk is a “run in there and get your hands dirty” kind of fighter, Spock’s character is, predictably, a man of stealth. A truly exciting aspect about the Star Trek game is that the game’s storyline is to serve as “a virtual bridge” between the first movie and its sequel. Given that Orci and Kurtzman are involved in the writing for the game, how could this game be anything but a brilliant segway from one movie to the other?
Carlson Choi, Namco’s head of marketing, describes the game as a “bro-op,” given the intense focus on Kirk and Spock’s unique relationship. The game will maintain the character’s personality traits – Spock warning Kirk to be cautious, with tension and humor unfolding in full force as Kirk ignores the heeding of his partner. Just what will play out in Star Trek’s mini-games? We look forward to finding out.
KitGuru says: Hungry for more news about this new Star Trek game? Namco promises to divulge information about the game (including the enemy) at this June’s E3. We’ll be here with more updates!
